
Champion lamb at Market Drayon
Champion lamb tops Market Drayton Easter sale
The ²ÝÁñÉçÇø Guardian supported Easter show and sale of prime lambs at Market Drayton averaged 445p/kg.
The champion lamb was the first prize winner from the singles class, a 48kg Beltex from Claire Tomlinson, Agden. It went on to sell for 620p/kg (£297.60/head) to Scott Shepley of Shepleys Butchers, Market Drayton.
Mrs Tomlinson also sold 39kg lambs at 548p/kg (£213.72/head), 34kg lambs at 530p/kg (£180.20/head) and 40kg lambs at 528p/kg (£211/head).
A large entry of hoggs averaged 338p/kg. Light hoggs sold to 322p/kg (£96.60/head) for 30kgs entries from J. Richards, Apley.
Standard hoggs peaked at 500p/kg (£192.50/head) for 38.5kg Beltex hoggs from Mrs Tomlinson.
Medium hoggs topped at 490p/kg (£211.19/head) for 43.1kgs hoggs from D. and J.M. Williams, Basford, and heavy hoggs sold to 482p/kg (£222.20/head) for Mrs Tomlinson.
Cull ewes were a flying trade selling to £280/head for continental ewes from D. Gatter, Cold Hatton, with rams to £192/head for Texels from J.L. Donlan, Hatherton, to average £174.92 overall.

Holstein bulls sell to 10,000gns
A new Holstein record was set at the Border and Lakeland Holstein Club spring bull sale when two animals sold for 10,000gns each.
The first bull to sell for 10,000gns was Errolston Milestone from D. and V. Davidson, Gretna. By Topstone, its dam was Errolston Presto Maui which recently classified VG 87 as a three-year-old. The buyer was Hardgrove Farms, Dumfries.
The other bull to make 10,000gns was Warnelview Zachary by Warnelview Nissan consigned by Kevin and Chrstine Wilson, Thursby. Its dam, by Alta Cordial, gave almost 17,000kgs in its most recent lactation. It sold to James Fingland, Castle Douglas.
Seven other bulls from the Warnleview herd averaged £6,420 which included the pre-sale show champion, Warnelview Neville by Bullseye made 9,000gns to Messrs Howat, Cumnock.

Reserve champion was the British Friesian bull, Whinnow Charter by Catlane Chad from I. and G.M. Blamire, Thursby, which was knocked down for 7,000gns to the Adams family, Stranraer.
Selling for 7,200gns was Winton Marlay by Outlay from Peter Waring, Beverely, which was bought by the Paul family, Lockerbie.
Averages: 24 bulls, £5,188.75; 17 Holstein bulls, £5,775; 6 British Friesian bulls, £4,655; 1 Ayrshire bull, £2,100.

Records smashed at Thrapston
There was a flying trade for store cattle at Thrapston with a new market record of £3,600 set for a 23-month-old Limousin steer from J. Bottesch, Holwell, Hertfordshire.

E.M. Sherwin and Sons, Kettering, sold Hereford steers to £2,440, heifers to £1,850, Devon heifers to £1,820 and steers to £1,700 and K.S. Lee, Oundle, sold Charolais steers to £2,030.
Aberdeen-Angus steers from M.W. Dale, March, topped £2,600 with two Dexter heifers from the same home to £570.
R. Truss, Horningsea, sold Lincoln Red steers to £,2320 to average £2,193.
S. and E. Dow, Huntingdon, sold Aberdeen-Angus steers to £1,850 and J.R.A. Steeples, Kettering, sold a 12-month-old Hereford heifer at £850.
Cows and calves sold to £1,700 for a Hereford heifer with a month-old Hereford heifer calf at foot from D.R.A. Fabb Contractors, Huntingdon.

Strong sheep trade at Lancaster
The Easter prize show and sale of spring lambs saw the champion Texel cross lamb from W.A. and L.M. Jenkinson, Stalmine, sell for £265 (602p/kg) to the judge, Nathan Brown, Littledale. The reserve champion was also from Messrs Jenkinson sold to Lakes and Dales, Preston, for £242 (576p/kg).
The sale of prime hoggs saw Beltex crosses sell to £191 for S.H and L.E. Birkett, Carnforth, also to Mr Brown, with others selling to 425p/kg for M. and S. Purtill, Wigan, bought by Lakes and Dales.
Cull ewes averaged £149/head, topping at £280 for Texel ewes from W.N. and D. Smith and Sons, Cockerham, with Mules to £226 for J.E. and J. Pye and Son, Quernmore.
The show and sale sheep with lambs at foot was judged by Susan Purtill, Wigan, who awarded the championship to a pen of Texel cross ewes with twin lambs from P.J. and E.S. Rogerson, Appleby which later sold for £490/outfit to J.S. Horner, Ingleton. All sheep and lambs at foot averaged £118/life.

Store cattle in demand at Cutcombe
There was a flying trade for store cattle at Cutcombe where D.W. and A.E. Enticott, Ashbrittle, led both the steer and heifer sections. Their 13-month-old 570kg Charolais cross steer made £2,550 to J. Francis, Herefordshire, and their 13-month-old 605kg Charolais heifers sold to £2,470 to the same buyer. Their consignment averaged £2,019/head and 425p/kg.
A run of 67 Charolais and Devons from R.W. Tucker and Son, Porlock, averaged 488p/kg.
Aberdeen-Angus cross steers sold to £2,000 for 585kg 22-month-old entries from A. Hall, Bratton Fleming, with 24-month-old 485kg Devon steers from M.R. Scott, Brendon Hill, at the same money.
R. Takle, Dulverton, sold 12-month-old 445kg Limousin cross steers to £1,900 and £1,880.
Messrs Enticott sold 480kg 16-month-old Limousin cross heifers to £1,870 and 440kg 16-month-old Simmental cross heifers to £1,520.
Averages: Steers, 429.59p/kg; heifers, 408.39p/k; overall, £1,560.

Record beef trade at Gisburn
Prime heifers sold to a record 508p/kg at Gisburn where the cull trade also saw a new top price of 406p/kg.
Leading the prime section was a 503kg red Limousin heifer from D. A. Wilcock, Ashton-in-Makerfield, which sold to Bacup butchers D. and A. Gregory and Son. Five more heifers topped the 480p/kg mark.
A 576kg Limousin steer from J. H. Stevenson and Son, Farnley, sold at 476ppk to Rawdon butchers, J. B. Wilkinson and Sons. The prime trade saw an increase of 10p/kg on the week to average 401p/kg for all grades.
A peak of 442p/kg (£3,279) came in the prime bull section for a 742kg black Limousin from J. M. Townsend, Laneshawbridge, selling to Bowland Foods, Preston.
Topping the cast cow trade at 406p/kg (£3,320) was an 800kg British Blue from H. and S. Maudsley, Rathmell, while bulls reached 376p/kg (£3,880) for a Limousin from G. S. and S. I. Bartlett, Blackpool.
Averages: Prime heifers 398p/kg; prime steers, 418p/kg; prime bulls, 390p/kg; cast cows and bulls including dairy, 254.06p/kg.

Beestonview dispersal tops at 3,450gns
The Beestonview herd of pedigree Holsteins and purebred Jerseys was dispersed at Shrewsbury on behalf of David, Joanna and Michael Lomas, Tarvin, topping at 3,450gns.
The sale topper was Beestonview Applejax Jones by Applejax, which was due with its third calf to a British Blue bull in September.
Next at 3,400gns was Beestonview Jingle Mint 4 by the British Friesian bull, Lakemead Jingle, due with its second calf, to a Longhorn, in October.
Jerseys sold to 2,080gns for a purebred heifer which had calved on March 22. Second lactation fresh Jerseys sold to 1,900gns. Jersey cross Norwegian Reds sold to 1,980gns for one in-calf to sexed Jersey for September.
Averages: 108 Holstein cows in milk and dry £2,550; 27 Jersey cows and heifers in-milk, £1,327; in-calf Jersey cross heifer, £1,365.

Strong store cattle trade at Pateley Bridge
The Easter show and sale of store cattle at Pateley Bridge topped at £2,840 for a Limousin steer from R. and K.A. Burley and Son, Wath, who also topped the heifers at £2,790 with a Limousin.
The championship went to a Limousin steer from E. and M. Townley, Clapham which sold for £2,700.
The winning heifer, a Limousin from J.A.S. Church, Lofthouse, sold for £2,680, with the third prize winning steer from the same home making £2,820.
Averages: Steers, £1,901.03; heifers, £1,786.15.
