Auction mart sales round-up: New dairy record at Penrith, ewes and lambs at Gisburn and store cattle at Wharfedale

A round-up of this week's livestock sales, including Dumfries, Sedgemoor, Shrewsbury and Exeter marts

Store cattle in demand at Wharfedale

Topping the ²ÝÁñÉçÇø Guardian supported show and sale of store cattle at £2,800 at Wharfedale was a Limousin steer from F.A. Caton, Weston, which sold to Robert Moran, Nappa.

Heifers sold to £2,550 for a Limousin consigned by Blue Hills Beef, Birkinshaw, which went to J.B. Eastwood, Emley, and bulls to £1,830 S. Ludbrook, Bingley.
The pre-sale show champion was the winning steer, a Limousin, from Robert Gray and family, Langbar, which went on to sell for £2,240 to the judge, Holly Cornforth, Newton Kyme.

Reserve champion was the second prize winning steer, a Limousin from Richard and James Wilson, Cleakheaton, which went to Jonathan Atkinson, Seaton Ross.

The third prize steer from A. and C.A. Proctor, Dacre, made £2,500 to Messrs Moran.
Messrs Gray also had the winning bull which made £1,600 to S. and C.R. Battye, Oxpring, who also paid £1,700 and £1,680 respectively for the second and third prize winners, both from M.R.D. and K.R. Wilson, Beckwithshaw.

The winning heifer was consigned by J.M. Wilson and Sons, Beckwithshaw, made £1,860 to R.A. Spink, Ripon, with the second prize winner from the same home making £1,780 to R.C. and W.H. Groves, Arthington. The third prize heifer from C. and A.G. Wills, Copgrove, sold for £2,310 to Messrs Eastwood.

Top price cow at £2,250 was the first prize winner from R. Searby and Sons, Wakefield, which sold to G.H. Crapper and Son, Billingley.

New dairy record at Penrith

A new market record of £3,600 was set at Penrith's dairy sale for a Holstein Friesian cross Ayrshire heifer, calved 17 days and giving 31kg, from D.W. Cannon and Son, Kirkby Thore, which sold to Messrs Dent, Darlington.

Cows averaged £2,512, topping at £3,200 for J. and B. Donald and Son with a Holstein Friesian cross Montbeliarde second calver, calved 28 days and giving 42kg. Two more from the same home sold at £3,000/head, with their consignment averaging £2,804.17.

Pure Jersey heifers from Messrs Cannon topped at £1,700 to S. Crozier, Silloth. Messrs Strong, Low Brow, sold British Friesian in-calf heifers to £2,000 four times, with this consignment averaging £1,800.

Flying store cattle trade at Dumfries

The ²ÝÁñÉçÇø Guardian supported sale of store cattle at Dumfries included 134 organic status cattle which topped at £2,220/head for a pen of 10-month-old Charolais heifers from M. Hamilton, Woolfords, who also sold other Charolais heifers to the top price per kilo of 567.20p.

Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from the same home sold to a top per head price of £2,190 and Charolais bullocks to top price per kilo of  619.4p/kg.

T.J. Paterson Farms, Newmilns, sold Simmental heifers to £2,000/head and Simmental and Aberdeen-Angus bullocks to £1,860/head and Aberdeen-Angus heifers to £1,900/head.

Trade for non-organic cattle was also strong with bullocks topping at £2,620/head for Charolais from D. Wilson and Son, Marwhirn, and 508.7p/kg for Aberdeen-Angus from A. Taylor, High Crubasdale.

Heifers sold to £2,340 Limousins from T.I. Bell and Son, Cormaddie, and 532.5p/kg for Limousins from Herries Farms, Langtonside.

Bulls peaked at £1,40 for Beef Shorthorns from J. Anderson, Rowanburnfoot, and 440p/kg for Limousins from J. MacDonald and Co, Drumyeonmore.

On the same day a new market record of £820 was set at the sale of rearing calves for a British Blue cross bull consigned by Coopon Carse Farm, Newton Stewart.

Averages: Organic cattle – bullocks, 524.47p/kg (£1,893.33/head); heifers, £472.25p/kg (£1,655.59); non-organic cattle – bullocks, 433.55p/kg; heifers, 414.6p/kg; bulls, 358.82p/kg.

Calved heifers to 3,300gns at Sedgemoor

At Sedgemoor's dairy sale, calved heifers sold to 3,300gns, 3,150gns and 3,000gns for commercial heifers from Coombes Manor Farm, Bridgwater, which also sold second lactation cows to 2,800gns.

Following the dispersal of their cows last month, Hampshire Holsteins, Winchester, offered their in-calf and maiden heifers from their Beauworthy herd. The in-calf heifer Tamroses Buehler G Star, due in July to the Aberdeen-Angus, made 2,750gns, with Sweetpeas Buehler Longchamp and Stars Buehler Swarovski both at 2,700gns.

Commercial bulling heifers from B.M. Coombes and Sons, Yeovil, sold to 1,380gns three times for daughters of Chase.

Yearling and younger heifers from Beauworthy sold to 1,150gns for eight-month-old heifers by Rebel Red and Blakely.

 Averages: Cows £2,625; heifers, £2,650; in-calf heifers, £2,340; bulling heifers, £1,390; yearling and younger heifers, £1,141; heifer calves, £476.

Champion tops Market Drayton dairies at £3,800

At the West Holstein Club show and sale at Market Drayton, the top price of £3,800 was for the champion and winning pedigree cow, Clayden Oracle Amanda, a second calver from Clayden Farm Partners, Crewe. Their six second calvers averaged £2,883.

The second prize pedigree cow was Bidlea Vault Papoose 2 from Ray Brown and Partners, Holmes Chapel, which sold for £3,300. They sold eight milkers to average £3,004, including heifers at £3,400 and £3,350.

Other pedigree second calvers sold to £3,480 and £2,950 for Hilltop Farming Co, Northwich; to £3,080 for Ruth Millington, Middlewich; and to £3,000 J. Lomax and Son, Baldwin's Gate.

The second prize commercial cow, a Holstein Friesian second calver from R.W. and E.E. Edwards and Sons, Whitchurch, sold for £2,950. The first prize commercial cow was a Brown Swiss cross from M. Weaver, Stone, which made £2,800.

Averages: 57 fresh heifers, £2,371; 22 fresh cows, £2,586.

Commercial dairy dispersal reaches £3,050 

The dispersal of the commercial dairy herd for H. Davies and Partners, Puddington, at Shrewsbury, topped at £3,050 for a five-year-old Brown Swiss cow giving 32kg.

A second calved Brown Swiss made £2,200 and Fleckveih cross heifers sold to £2,600.

The 16 August and September calvers, in-calf to a sexed British Blue bull, averaged £2,489.

Montbeliards due in September with their third calves sold to £2,980, and Fleckveihs in-calf for the second time peaked at £2,850.

Dry cows peaked at £2,450 and £2,380 for Fleckveihs due with their second calves, and a six-year-old dry Brown Swiss cow sold for £2,320.

Exeter dairy sale peaks at £3,200

There was a strong dairy trade at Exeter which topped at £3,200 for a pedigree Holstein heifer from Martin and Di Webber, Drewsteighton, with a pedigree Jersey heifer from Gareth Hutchings, Launceston, selling at £1,600.

The dispersal of the crossbred late autumn and winter calving grazing herd on behalf of Stephen and Lucie Home, Holsworthy, saw 70 cows out of the 98 making more than £2,000. The cows were a three-way cross of Danish Red, Jersey Holstein and topped at 2,700gns for a second calver due in October.

Five young cows made 2,600gns with others to 2,550gns, 2,500gns and 2,400gns. Crossbred in-calf heifers due November and December topped at 1,680gns with others to £1,600gns and £1,500 five times.  

The consignment of 5,000 litre grazing type British Friesian and crossbred cows, all due September and October, from Trink Dairy, St Ives, saw 20 sell for more than £2,000 and to a top of £2,400 with others to £2,300 and £2,250. In-calf heifers sold to £1,350.

Averages: Home dispersal – 98 in-milk cows and heifers (including all faults), £2,152; 21 in-calf  and served crossbred heifers, £1,351; overall, £2,010/life; Trink Dairy – 56 in-milk cows and heifers including 18 sixth-ninth calvers, £1,763; 10 in-calf heifers, £1,219.

Ewes and lambs in demand at Gisburn

Twin lamb outfits saw a top price of £560 at Gisburn while ewes with singles peaked at £420.

Leading the sale at £186.66/life were Beltex cross Texel shearlings with twins from D. and L. Coar, Darwen, who also sold two-crop ewes at £500/outfit twice.

Also selling to £400-plus were Dutch Spotteds, Texels and mixed mouth Cheviot Mules. North of England Mules with twins sold to £350 and the overall average for all breeds and ages of twin outfits was £116.66/life.

Heading the single outfits at £210/life was a three-year-old registered Suffolk ewe with ram lamb from J. M. and E. L. Sharp, Giggleswick, while Texel three-crop ewes with singles from R. Seed and Son, Chipping, made to £310. All single outfits levelled at £126.27/life which included a pen of Cheviot cross Welsh ewe outfits which topped at £175.

Luther Holstein dispersal

The Master Breeders winning herd of pedigree Holsteins was dispersed at Sedgemoor on behlf of the Luther family, Poole, topping at £3,885 for the VG87 autumn second calver Foxminster Moberry Broma by a home-bred bull and giving 51kgs.  
At £3,675 was the first lactation Fynn Magnolia VG85 and third calver Sassafras Junkita Ex90.

Three heifers due in July to the Hereford sold for £2,572.50. Bulling heifers by Applejax from the Berry family sold at £1,522.50 and July 2024-born Sizzler heifers at £1,312.50.

Averages: Cows and heifers, £2,342; in-calf heifers, £2,201; maiden heifers, £1,250; heifer calves, £367.50.
