Limousin takes top honors at the Royal Welsh Show

It was the Limousin champion Grahams Ruth, a three-year-old cow from Robert and Jean Graham, Bridge of Allan, Stirling which clinched the overall beef inter-breed title.

Brought out by Lynsey Bett, the home-bred Claragh Franco daughter was shown with Trixie, its October-born heifer calf at foot.

This is the second Royal inter-breed win for the outfit after taking the same title at the Royal Highland title earlier this summer.

She was also part of the winning team in the Fitzhugh pairs with Dinmore Perfection from Mr Dawes, Hereford.

The Hereford champion was the bull, Solpoll 1 Trailblazer, from the Bowen family, Glamorgan, who also won the title here in 2019.  The bull was bought privately in February 2021 at 14 months old from John and William McMordie, Northern Ireland, for £10,000. The son of Solpoll 1 Promoter, which was imported from Canada as an embryo, was inter-breed champion at Shropshire Show and reserve at the Bath and West.

Taking the Charolais championship on his Royal Welsh show debut was Sean Mitchell, Penrith, with  Harestone Rapunzel.
The March 2020-born cow was shown with its heifer calf at foot and is back in-calf to Barnsford Ferny which was Royal Welsh inter-breed champion 10 years ago. It was second at the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire shows this season.
Reserve champion went to the Knighton based, Corbett family with Teme Stardust.
The home-bred two-year-old heifer is a daughter of Barnsford Ferny out of Teme Magnolia, which was breed champion at the show in 2018.

In-calf to Lochend Shell, it was inter-breed champion at Royal Three Counties and reserve inter-breed champion at Shropshire County Show earlier in the year as well as a class winner at the national Charolais show at the Great Yorkshire Show.

These were both part of the winning team of five competition beating 11 other breeds. They were joined by Breos T Rex from Messrs Evans, Glamorgan, Moelfre Nana from the Moelfre herd, Gaerfyrddin and Moelfre Silk from Kevin and Sioned Thomas, Gaerfyrddin.

Tuesday saw the commercial beef judged by showring regular, Tudor Edwards, Corwen, who was looking for style, balance and locomotion. The overall commercial championship was taken by first-time Royal Welsh exhibitor, James Nesbit, Ayrshire. His Limousin heifer, Starlight by Gallaber Leo was bought from Patley Bridge market in February and also claimed the championship at the Royal Highland Show.

The reserve heifer champion, Miss Bala stepped into the overall reserve spot. The May 2022-born, Charollais heifer was bred by Messrs Mills and exhibited by Messrs Roberts, Gwynedd.
