Whitebred Shorthorns sell to 5,500gns

The sale of Whitebred Shorthorns at Carlisle topped at 5,500gns for the overall champion, the winning bull, Blackburn Hallraiser, an April 2023-born son of Ottercops Sampson out of Ottercops Heather Bell from G. Jackson, Newcastleton. The buyer was Messrs Reddaway and Son, Courtenay.

Next at 3,000gns was the second prize bull and overall reserve champion, May 2023-born Parton Icepop by Parton Ferdinand consigned by J.A. Hewson, Burgh By Sands, which was knocked down to Messrs Brown, Kendal.

Females sold to 2,000gns twice for the bulling heifers, Glentyne Calluna 2 and Glentyne Lydia, both by Glentyne Grafter and from G.J. Taylor, Castle Doughlas, which both sold to Messrs Pattinson and Son, Bardon Mill.

 Averages - 3 bulls, £3,675; 3 females, £1,820.

 Milk in demand at Gisburn

An Aireburn heifer from G.B. Moorhouse, Skipton, topped the 71 head at Gisburn's dairy sale at £3,550, before auctioneer Eleanor O'Neill was joined on the rostrum by the Norton and Brooksbank team for the pedigree Heygill herd dispersal.

Hollinshall heifers, from R. C. and S. W. Beecroft, Killinghall, reached £3,450 twice for Siemers Darwin daughters.

At the same price, Jennings ²ÝÁñÉçÇø, Ripon, sold their Abbeyhouse Alcove Kathy 2, while J., J. M. and H. J. Walmsley, Preston, took a £3,400 bid for their Nosbisch Solito-Red sired Fordswood heifer.

Two heifers followed at £3,350 apiece, a 35kg Newbirks entry by Toc-Farm Fitz from A. Lawson and Son, Arthington, and 34kg Bowlandview Heart Edna from J. and I. Garth, Great Eccleston.

Non-pedigree heifers sold to £3,000 twice for J. and B. Rowland, Haighton, and B. M. and J. B. Booth, Bolton-by-Bowland.

Pedigree cows reached £3,050 twice for R. and M. Cowgill's Hoole herd, Preston.

Averages - Pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,876; non-pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,395; pedigree newly calved cows, £2,772; non-pedigree newly calved cows, £2,210; in-calf heifers £1,923.

Heygill dispersal peaks at 3,900gns

The disersal of the Heygill herd of almost 200 head of Holsteins on behalf of David, Linda and Robert Cowgill, Clitheroe, saw nearly a third of the milking portion selling for more than 3,000gns.
Trade peaked at 3,900gns for the fresh second calver, Heygill Haze Carmen by Rubi-Haze giving 44kg daily which was bought by C. Middleton and Sons, Clitheroe.

At 3,700gns was Heygill Chief Carmen 3, a milking heifer in-calf for June to sexed Parfect which went to S. Forshaw and Sons, Preston.

A handful of in-calf heifers sold to 2,900gns for a June calving daughter of Chief, with recently served heifers selling between 1,500gns and 2,200gns.

Bulling heifers topped at 2,800gns for a Comestar Loyall daughter from the Ashlyn family. The trade of the day was for the heifer calves, with 16 selling in excess of 1,000gns, topping at 1,500gns for Heygill Chief Mattie, a late July-born Chief daughter bought by Messrs Forshaw.

 Averages – 108 cows and calved heifers, £2,646; 6 served heifers, £2,10; 34 maiden heifers, £1,462; 33 heifer calves, £970; 182 head, £2,094.

Strong calf trade at Leyburn

Rearing calves sold to £880 in Leyburn for a a British Blue bull from Keith Nicholson, Kirkby Malzeard, with another five British Blue bulls selling for more than £800, with 18 between £700 and £790.

David Smith, Keighley, sold Charolais bulls at £860 and £850 and Stephen Brown, East Witton, sold an Aberdeen-Angus at £790. John Pratt, Bainbridge, took £750 for a British Blonde and T.H. Mace and Son, Esh, sold a Limousin at £700.

Heifers peaked at £620 for Colin Whitelock, Skipton, with a British Blue, then £600 was achieved three times for Charolais from David Smith twice and David Wood, Aysgarth, with a Limousin.

John Pratt also made £500 for an Aberdeen-Angus heifer, as did Messrs Mace.

 The dairy sale peaked at £3,100 for a calved pedigree Holstein heifer from Metcalfe Farms, Washfold, Leyburn, bought by K. Wilkinson, Ferryhill, Co Durham. Trade was strong with six of the 15 calved heifers making £3,000 or more and the remainder not dropping below £2,000.

British Blue bull tops Market Drayton calves

A new record of £740 was set at the sale of 814 calves at Market Drayton. The sale topper was a month-old British Blue bull from S. Ellis and Son, Wrexham. The 158 continental bulls set a new record averaged of £422 with 46 selling for more than £500.

The 219 Friesians sold to £260 for D.I. and D. Ellis and Sons, Oswestry. The 126 native bulls averaged £356 selling to £505 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Richardson Farms, Warmingham.
The 141 Native heifers averaged £236 which included a lot of grass based system calves. Top price was a Hereford from E. Fair, Peatswood at £430. The 167 continental heifers averaged £368 with a top price of £550 for a Charolais from G.B. Warner, Shrewsbury.
