Former US President looks set to make a return to the White House following this month's US Election

Donald Trump has claimed victory in the US Presidential Election after securing winning almost 70 states more than opponent and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who took top spot in just 226 areas.

Republican Mr Trump was declared the winner by Fox News, where he hailed the result as ‘a magnificent victory'.

"America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate," he told supporters in Florida.

The UK Prime Minister was one of the first to send his congratulations to Mr Trump, calling his win an 'historic election victory'.

"I look forward to working with you in the years ahead. As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.

"From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come."

Mr Trump will now begin gathering his cabinet and finalising policies which will focus on immigration - he has pledged to finish building 'his wall' separating the US from Mexico - trade, and removing the US from foreign conflicts.

Despite polls which had put Ms Harris 1% point ahead of the Republican candidate, the vice-president conceded defeat and urged her supporters to accept her loss and focus instead on the future. "While I concede this election," she said, "I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign."

President Joe Biden congratulated Mr Trump and promised there would be a smooth transistion to power.

He told Democrat supporters: "A country chooses one or the other. We accept the choice the country makes,."
