Tangible outcomes must come out of the Government’s emergency summit on the ongoing UK pig crisis, with expectations it will take until spring or early summer to clear the backlog.
The meeting will take place at Defra’s headquarters in London on Thursday February 10 following a joint request from the NFU and the National Pig Association (NPA).
It will explore various ways to help speed up the processing of British pigs and ease the backlog on farms, estimated at 170,000 in early December by Defra.
NPA chair Rob Mutimer said "This is the third roundtable that has been held since the start of this crisis, so we really need to see something tangible out of it.
"Many pig farmers are now utterly desperate and we need to try and find urgent solutions to get things moving, and also to share the burden of all this more evenly.
"We must act collectively now to save the British pig industry."
NPA launch new social media campaign
A new social media campaign highlighting what retailers are doing to support British pig farmers has been launched by the National Pig Association (NPA).
It will showcase good examples from supermarkets to back producers in their sourcing, promotion, labelling and display of British pork products.
Anyone can post their image and comments on their social media accounts, tagging the NPA and the retailer using #PorkReport.
